MAINE ORCHID SOCIETY
Minutes of the December 8, 2008, Meeting:
President Bob Cleveland called the meeting to order and welcomed several new members who had read about us in the local paper. This meeting was the annual Holiday Potluck meeting which began half an hour earlier than usual (at 6:30 p.m.) with a wonderful assortment of hot, cold, sweet and savory dishes which were prepared by the members. In addition to growing beautiful orchids, the Society has some fabulous cooks as well. Thank you to all who contributed food and special thanks to Marie and Jim Volkommer who set up the tables for the pot luck dinner and handled the clean up duties afterward. A reminder: next month’s meeting will begin at the usual time of 7:00 p.m.
Treasurer’s Report Carl Burnham reported $2,785.23 currently in our bank account.
Old Business
Portland Flower Show: Bob Cleveland reminded us that we won’t be participating in the Portland Flower Show this spring. He will be looking into the possibility of having a table or display at the Gorham Home & Garden Show, which was held at USM last year. Bob believes that they will hold it at a different venue this year and will report on it when he finds out more.
MEOS Membership dues: If you have not paid yet, they are due now for the year, which runs September, 2008, through June, 2009. Dues are $15.00 for an individual member and $25.00 for household membership. Please fill out the form below and mail with your payment to our treasurer, Carl Burnham, as soon as possible. Checks should be made out to the Maine Orchid Society.
Reminder: Our new web page is seeking your orchid photos and/or articles about orchids. Contact Jessie Bruns or e-mail your contributions for the web page to mbruns1@maine.rr.com The web page can be viewed by going to maineorchidsociety.org
New Business
It was noted that two local newspapers carried articles about the Society in the last few days.
Show Table
Bob Cleveland reviewed the gorgeous lineup of blooming orchids on the show table and commented about each one. Members are welcome to bring in blooming orchids each month to show the Society what can be accomplished on a Maine windowsill or greenhouse.
The business meeting concluded and the evening’s program began.
Program
Tonight’s program was a short, but lovely slide show on miniature orchid species provided by the American Orchid Society. Miniature orchids are those which are less than six inches in height.
Raffle
No raffle this month.
Respectfully submitted, Sue Hamilton, Secretary
